Daily Poem – Christmas Eve in a Chinese Restaurant

Christmas Eve in a Chinese Restaurant
We drove the bitter four- hours
To Long Island.
Her mother gave me
My annual Christmas shirt,
The collar was tight.

The family was going to
Her sister’s for
Christmas Eve dinner.
Filet Mignon
Was on the menu.
We weren’t invited.

We ate alone in a
Chinese restaurant
With plastic table cloths and
Bitter tea from
Teacups with no handles.
There was nothing
Sweet on the menu.

It was near train tracks
In downtown Farmingdale and
Lonely as a AA meeting
On St. Patrick’s Day.
